Pawsox Event

RISEP once again participated in the ASCE Pawsox Event!  The Pawsox events in the past have been a great opportunity to enjoy a PawSox game and to network with other organizations!  This year's event was held on August 8, 2008 and was again held in the Green Barbecue Tent.  Game time was 7:05 p.m., with the tent opening two hours prior at 5:05 p.m.

Due to the generosity of our sponsors; the ticket price was just $12 this year, which included the ticket into the game and the barbecue tent food: Grilled Chicken, Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Cole Slaw, Potato Chips, Lemonade, and an Ice Cream Sandwich.  The raw cost per person would be approximately $24.

Summer Event

This year’s Summer Event took place at the Providence Piers on Thursday, August 7th at 5pm.  The event started off with a cocktail reception with a cheese and cracker table.  This was followed by a boat tour of the bay with guest speaker, Dr. Connelly, who provided information on the history of the bay and what the future holds.  Following the tour was dinner, which consisted of a variety of salads, corn on the cob, baked beans, barbeque chicken, swordfish kabobs, burgers and hot dogs.  To end the night in style for all those with a sweet tooth there was ice cream with chocolate sauce.  And, of course, during the event there was a cash bar.

Environmental Management System (EMS) Seminar

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation sponsored a 4-hour seminar for local businesses and municipalities on the benefits and process of implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS).  The seminar was free and was held at the Radisson Airport Hotel on September 14, 2007 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

During the seminar the purpose and objectives of an EMS were reviewed and discussed as well as the many advantages of implementing an EMS, and outlining a practical strategy for developing and implementing an EMS that focuses on achieving meaningful results.  Attendees learned how an EMS can help improve:

·          management of environmental risk;

·          compliance with state and federal environmental regulations;

·          environmental communications and record keeping; and

·          relationships with regulatory agencies and other stakeholder groups.

This seminar was for organizations that are either considering an EMS or have decided to implement an EMS and were seeking ideas for an implementation strategy.  Individuals with environmental management responsibilities as well as senior level managers are encouraged to, and did attend.

WATERFIRE, Barnaby Evans' award winning fire sculpture installation on the three rivers in downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence's renaissance. WaterFire centers on a series of 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. The string of fires illuminates nearly two-thirds of a mile of urban public spaces and parks, and residents and visitors gather to stroll along the river while listening to a memorable and eclectic selection of classical and world music that serves as a melodic accompaniment to the normal sounds of urban life. The fires are tended from sunset to past midnight by black-clad performers in boats who pass quietly before the flames.
